Sunny Weather and Butter

sunny pressingOur unusual sunny weather continues, and we pressed apples and pears today in the sun (not in stormy weather).  Per grampa’s rain gauge we had 4.5 inches of rain in September this year as opposed to 6.9 inches last year.  I am not complaining since we did get some rain, and the grass is growing again.  Here is the pressed juice flowing,

and here are three carboys of cider getting prepped.  Notice the last carboy which is from traditional cider apples as compared to the other two carboys of dessert apples and crabapples.

And here are some sunny pig butts.

sunny pig buttsI decided to make butter today.  I have always wanted to make it.  I was planning on milking Rosie this year and make butter with her cream, but she died instead.  So yesterday at the store there was a 1/2 gallon carton of organic cream on huge sale since it was about to expire.  I have never seen a large carton of cream at the store before much less on huge sale so I took it home.  And today half of it became butter.

It is really good.  We had chuck roast with potatoes and carrots for dinner (all from our farm) and the butter tasted great on the veggies.

PS Little Orphan Indy is getting better at bottle-feeding.  Below is the first time (yesterday) she took a bottle without having to catch her first.
